There are a great variety of mammals to be found on the Isle of Wight, including the Water Vole, Common Shrew, Dormouse, Mole, Wood Mouse, Weasel, Stoat, Fox, Badger, Rabbit, Brown Hare, Red Squirrel and Hedgehog. Amongst the better-known species that are synonymous with the British countryside there are several rare or less well-known ones: The Island's abundance of hedgerows, woodlands and farmland makes for an excellent variety of habitats. Many shrew and vole species favour rough vegetation and waterside and footpaths alongside and the Island's rivers and estuaries offer many opportunities to see these tiny animals. Dormice can be found on the Island but, being nocturnal they are very difficult to see. An abundance of other small mammals means that the Island has reasonable populations of predatory species such as Stoats and Weasels. Page 1 of 2 : Next | View Other Species |
