Many species of bat are also found here including the Barbastelle and the Bechstein's Bat, woodland bats, which are considered extremely rare in the UK. One of the most popular mammal species is the Red Squirrel. The introduction of the Grey Squirrel from America was a mistake made during the Victorian era, as it was not known at the time that the Grey Squirrel out-competes our native Red and now the Isle of Wight is one of the last refuges where the Red has survived in Britain. Great care has always been taken to ensure that the Grey has not been allowed to settle here. Any wooded area on the Island is likely to have a population with certain areas more so than others with Reds preferring coniferous woodland. Gurnard Pines holiday park and Robin Hill Country Park for example have very friendly populations and can be seen sitting outside the chalets or running around the paths.
